Winter Expo 2006 Well where to start? The coach journey was in record time – good work Tone! Everyone pulled together as a team to unpack the coach and sort out all our stuff in Rydal Hall. A late night was had by all, later for some than others; “We knew we had a big day ahead of us so we all hit the sack” – Dan Q Up bright and early the next morning for a big breakfast ready to go walking. Tony drove five of the seven groups to various start points around Ambleside and Grasmere to begin their epic journey. With some groups tackling climbs equipped with ice axes and crampons to learn the essential skills on helm crag – otherwise known as the lion and the lamb! After refuelling on tea and cake back at base, a few hours of free time and rest was very much appreciated. After the most professional shower i.e., cold as to not let cramp dictate Sunday’s activities – we were unfortunately left to our own devices… Cooking food being one – after a long awaited thawed meat exertion the most lovingly tendered food was beautifully presented in a modern ‘disorganised’ fashion. It was only a few ungrateful individuals who complained about the slightly hard potatoes. Despite this a pub visit was deemed inevitable; Tony filled the surprisingly empty room with glorious music. It could be said that a few of the more mature and responsible adults wisely stayed at the hall to not only get a good revitalising sleep for the day ahead, but also to keep the younger members company. This was achieved by not only writing on Maddie with an ice axe but also with eye liner. The CD player and speakers were borrowed for extra entertainment. It was also proven that the art of gymnastics is possible in a variety of environments such as triple bunk beds, and tumbling over a line of six. Moving back to the pub goers, who woke the responsible adults on their return. LOL! They had enjoyed a hearty sing song at the local with tones guitar. A few hours later and we were up again. Different groups today each led by a member of the pack. In a timed competition, walking / running to success was Dan's team who were rewarded with CHOCOLATE!! So with the walking over there was just time for a spot of jumping into the plunge pool – for those brave enough anyway! And that was it. Winter expo over for another year. Fun had by all and a great start on preparing for this years Norway expedition. Woohhh.
